Our small flock of Organic Bronze turkeys
was established in 1996 as a first step towards developing a
more mixed and sustainable farming system. Two redundant farm
buildings were converted, generously proportioned paddocks were
created, and osiers and fruit trees were planted to provide the
birds with shelter and insects. Given that the turkey is a
woodland bird it seemed appropriate they should be based at
Woodlands Farm.
The Woodlands flock is of a traditional
bronze variety. Most of the birds are produced from our own breeding
stock and where practical when a hen goes broody she is allowed
to sit, usually on about fifteen eggs.
Once the chicks are hatched they are
brought up in a small groups. This helps reduce the risk of
disease. The birds have access to the paddocks at all times,
except at night when they prefer to perch indoors.
It has been of special concern that the
slaughtering should be carried out humanely. Sooner than
transport our birds to an abattoir, which can be stressful, this
is carried out when the birds are out of sight of each other on
their home territory.
The Result : Healthy, contented
birds of quality producing a fine gamey flavour for the
traditional feast.
