Andrew Dennis has been voted Farmer of the Year in the BBC Food and Farming Awards 2009. Andrew, who accepted the award on behalf of Woodlands at a ceremony attended by HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, paid tribute to the team at Woodlands without whom this award would not have been possible.
‘It proved a really interesting adventure’ he said later. ‘which simply wouldn’t have happened without the dedication and effort of all my colleagues on the farm. I think what makes this award special is that we were nominated by members of the public. It kind of makes you feel on track’.
The award was presented to Andrew by Alex James, farmer and bass guitarist with the pop group Blur. who together with Lord Chris Haskins, former chair of Northern Foods, and a panel of judges headed by the chef Raymond Blanc, judged the BBC awards. For more info visit www.bbc.co.uk

friday, 14th August. Head ploughman (and Woodlands oracle!) for over forty years Charlie helped implement some extraordinary changes during this time. Farm machinery, crop rotations, crop yields, employment levels and attitudes to food altered beyond recognition. More recently the smooth transformation of Woodlands into the organic farm it is today would not have been possible without Charlie’s support, good humour and friendship.
Woodlands is as much about people as it is about crops. It’s been a true pleasure working with you, Charlie. We all wish you many warm wishes for the future (and look forward to a few more good stories!).

Among the straw, snug as rabbits, or bumble bees (or both) snooze the seven new-born piglets, one of whom (Trevor) is much smaller than the rest. Trevor, I suppose, is the runt, though really you wouldn’t think so given his efficiency at reaching the teat before all the others. Stacey’s doing fine. If you follow the Farm walk and Poetry Trail signs you may be able to see her!…

Around 2000 adults & children (& terriers!) visited Woodlands on Sunday 5th July for our summer open day. Bees, rabbits, breadmaking, farm machinery displays, ferrets, bats & terrier racing, pick your own strawberries………we had a great time! Artist-in-residence Rosie Redzia ran drawing and painting workshops and some wonderful images and interpretations were recorded. This was our best open day for sure!
Just as a reminder, the farm trail is free, open all year and begins at the farmyard at Woodlands. Why not come and visit…….look out for the badgers & rabbits! We plan to host a Christmas day in November. We’ll keep you posted.
